Boss Stories

dragonlady's denOn my first job ever, way back in the Dark Ages when I was 16 years old, I worked at a drive-in restaurant, selling 15 cent burgers and soft-serve ice cream. The place was owned and run by a married couple and their 20-something son. The employees were all teenaged, and we liked to goof around a lot when the bosses weren't there. So one night, when they WERE there, and I was working, a couple of my co-workers who were not working that night came by and we asked if I could leave and go with them for an hour or so. We went to the owners' house---a really nice house in a nice development---and totally toilet papered their house and yard. Then yard was fairly well-lit, and when we were done, you could clearly see our handiwork from the highway. We then went to the house of a regular customer, a really nasty, grumpy old man, took a pair of his underwear off his clothesline and stuffed them in his mailbox. (Teenaged hijinks were much more benign in those days.) They dropped me back off at work, and we never heard ONE WORD from the owners about it.

Another job I had in my late 20's-early 30's was for a family-owned electrical supply warehouse. Daddy was the chairman of the board, son #1 was president, daughter #1's husband was vice-president,, daughter #2 was showroom manager (and my immediate boss), daughter #2's hubby was a branch manager, and son #2 was a spoiled teenage boy working in the warehouse. Every family member and their spouse had a company car. When daughter #2 went to run the showroom at the beach, I ended up doing all the puchasing for all 3 showrooms while daughter #1 sat at the beach talking on the phone and playing cards with the contractors. When daddy paid for her to take a Hawaiian vacation, I went to the beach showroom and spent a week just cleaning up after her! I got to the bottom of a pile behind the counter and found bug-infested, rotting food---ugh! It had its ups as well as its downs---literally! Son #1, on more than one occasion, went into the showroom bathroom, laid out a couple lines in the tank lid, and invited me to snort away! (Gotta do what the boss says, yah?) One day he was fiddling with his boat right outside the building and he handed me the rest of a joint and invited me to finish it. That was a fun day...But he started doing waaaay too much nose candy...he'd even go get money from the bookkeeper to "take some contractors out for lunch," but he spent it all on cocaine. People's personalities change drastically for the worse when they get addicted to coke...so I ended up quitting because of his drug habit (and also his sexual harrassment of me and any other female there).
Now I've been the boss for almost 20 years where I am. My boss stories aren't funny, but I'll betcha my staff members' are!
